The Process of turning a handmade pen
I first start with an idea of what i want the
ending product to look like. I hand select
each blank that I turn from my vast selection
for figure and overall quality. I will
sometimes ponder over two or more blanks
for a day before I decide which one to use.

Sometimes I decide to laminate several
pieces of wood together for a truly unique
pen.

The turning process:
I turn each pen on my wood lathe using
various HSS hand chisels. I do not use a
duplicator as some do to save time. I want
each item I create to be one of a kind and in
order for this to occur I hand turn each one.
During this stage I decide what the overall
ending profile for he pen will be.

The Finish:
I finish all of my pens using a three stage
process. This process will help to keep the
wood beautiful for a lifetime.

During the first stage i sand down to 600 grit.
I then apply 4 layers of CA glue to fill in the
wood pores. After that I again sand starting
with 600 grit and working up to 7000 grit.
After the sanding process is complete I
apply a liquid polish followed by a Carnuba
wax. Once the waxing process is complete I
then assembly the various pieces of the fine
writing instrument.
